Background of the study
Intonation is a key prosodic feature that influences meaning and emotional expression in speech. In Igbo oratory traditions in Anambra, intonation not only conveys rhetorical power but also shapes phonological patterns through systematic pitch variations. Traditional Igbo oratory employs complex intonation contours to emphasize key messages, enhance narrative structure, and engage audiences (Okeke, 2023). This study appraises the role of intonation in structuring phonological patterns by analyzing recorded speeches and oratory performances. Acoustic analysis techniques are used to measure pitch range, contour shape, and rhythmic timing, providing insight into how intonation affects segmental phonology and overall speech intelligibility. The study further explores the relationship between intonation patterns and cultural identity in Igbo oratory, highlighting the role of traditional practices in preserving linguistic heritage. Findings from this investigation will inform language teaching, performance training, and speech synthesis applications tailored to Igbo, enhancing both theoretical and practical approaches to prosody (Ibrahim, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Despite the centrality of intonation in Igbo oratory, systematic studies on its role in shaping phonological patterns are limited. Inconsistencies in intonation can affect speech clarity and the effectiveness of rhetorical delivery, hindering the transmission of cultural narratives (Chinwe, 2023). The absence of detailed acoustic data on intonation patterns in Igbo oratory complicates efforts to develop effective training methods and speech technology solutions. This study addresses these gaps by providing a comprehensive appraisal of intonation’s impact on phonological structures in Igbo speeches, thereby supporting improvements in language teaching and cultural preservation.
